Submission Period: February 4 - February 21, 2025

Opening Reception/Celebration: Thursday, April 3, 2025
Play Readings: Friday, April 4 & Saturday, April 5, 2025
Festival Mission: AZUCAR! New Play Reading Festival is dedicated to supporting the new play development process for Afro-Latine playwrights, living, working within the American South. Our mission is to celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of African Diasporic peoples through the power of storytelling. This festival serves as a platform to amplify voices, support artistic growth, and create space for dialogue within our diverse communities.

Open to Afro-Latine playwrights of all backgrounds and experience levels.
Submitted works must be new and must not have received a professional production.
Playwrights must be available to join both rehearsals (in-person or virtually).

Types of Works Accepted: One-act plays, full-length plays, or 10-minute plays.
Format: Submit scripts in PDF format with the playwright’s name, contact information, and a brief synopsis included.
Submission Limit: Playwrights may submit one work for consideration.
Language: Submissions can be in English, Spanish, or bilingual.

Playwrights must be available to participate in both rehearsals (in-person or virtually).
Rehearsals will be director-led and will take place from March 31 - April 3, 2025, at the André Cailloux Center for Performing Arts & Cultural Justice, 2541 Bayou Road, New Orleans, LA 70119.

A selection panel will review all submissions.
Playwrights will be notified of selection decisions on February 24, 2025
Selected works will receive:
Two director-led rehearsals with a professional director.
A professional cast of four actors.
An honorarium of $100 for each selected playwright.
